About Our Team
San Carlos Kayaks is proud to be a local, family-owned and operated business founded by Eduardo Rivas.

Born and raised in the fishing town of Puerto San Carlos in the Magdalena Bay area…
Eduardo considers himself fortunate to have grown up surrounded by the natural beauty and spectacular wildlife of Baja ~

Eduardo’s journey with sea kayaking began in the early 2000’s when he became a professional sea kayak guide and, in 2003, a certified instructor with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), an American organization with a branch in Baja.
Over the years, Eduardo honed his skills as a sea kayak instructor, working in both Alaska and Baja with NOLS, and spending five seasons on Vancouver Island’s west and east coasts in Canada. After two decades of living on beautiful Vancouver Island, Eduardo has returned to his roots in Puerto San Carlos for the winter months. Here, he combines his deep connection to the region with his passion for kayaking to share the wonders of the ocean and his hometown with visitors from around the world.
More about Our Team…
Ashley Rowe
As Eduardo’s wife, Ashley plays a crucial role in supporting this family venture. While often working behind the scenes, she brings a wealth of knowledge in kayaking and excels in customer service, leadership and communication.
Ashley holds a full-time position with the City of Nanaimo’s Aquatics Department, serves as the Commodore of the Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club, and is a Crew member and Treasurer for the Nanaimo Marine Search and Rescue.
Neyma Rivas
Eduardo’s eldest sister, Neyma, is responsible for logistics and coordinates all of the activities we organize.
She also manages our comfy Kayak House B&B in the heart of San Carlos.
If you visit our office, you’ll likely meet Neyma, whose warmth and efficiency ensures every detail of your experience runs smoothly.
Captain Gabriel Roa
Captain Gabriel is highly respected in Puerto San Carlos for his extensive knowledge of Magdalena Bay’s waters earned through a lifetime of fishing in the area throughout Magdalena bay and the Sea of Cortez.
Transitioning from commercial fishing to environmentally focused activities, Captain Gabriel now specializes as a sport fishing and whale-watching guide, offering invaluable insights into the region’s marine ecosystem.
Our passion is to foster
a deeper understanding and appreciation
of Baja as a winter kayaking destination.
Choose San Carlos Kayaks because…
We are passionate about the outdoors and keen to share the beauty, wonder and the local culture of Baja with other like-minded individuals. Our goal is to provide an experience that will create positive change and social connections with opportunities to learn more about our local culture, natural environment, and history.

By choosing San Carlos Kayaks…
You are supporting our mission to promote environmental awareness and outdoor activities among our local youth.
We believe that fostering
these values will help
cultivate empathy for the
natural world in future generations.
These activities, such as kayaking, hiking, and camping with “Leave No Trace” principles, are not traditionally part of our local culture, and our team is proud to make a positive difference in the world.
Our Mission
We aim to share our love for the land and sea of Puerto San Carlos with visitors from across the globe through kayaking and anyone interested in this region of the Baja Peninsula.
Our Vision
Our vision encompasses two main goals:
1. To introduce visitors to the beauty of the Baja Peninsula and inspire a deeper connection with nature and the Baja Culture through kayaking.
2. To foster an appreciation for outdoor activities among local youth. We believe that by engaging in activities like sea kayaking, hiking, and camping, young people can develop a greater respect for the environment and the land they call home.
At San Carlos Kayaks, we strive to build a culture of sea kayaking and appreciation of the outdoors within the local community to drive environmental stewardship. Through partnerships with local high schools, we offer kayak courses that incorporate environmental education. We also aim to create cultural exchange opportunities, such as bringing Canadian high school students to Puerto San Carlos for immersive outdoor and cultural experiences.
Our friendly Team is always open to answering your questions.
We are a wealth of information on kayaking in Magdalena Bay and the Sea of Cortez, and have information on many general Baja topics as well.
